Dialysis or
kidney transplant?
If your kidneys collapse, you will need one of two treatments to stay alive: a kidney transplant or dialysis treatment. Many patients come to the transplant center believing the myth that they can live forever with dialysis, but this simply isn’t true. Although dialysis is a “lifesaving” treatment, it only does about 10% of the work a healthy kidney can do. And because of its effect on the body, dialysis can cause medical problems such as anemia, bone disease, high blood pressure, nervous system injury, infections, nausea and vomiting, headaches, and muscle spasms.
Therefore, the average life expectancy of a dialysis patient is typically about 5 years.
